He knew it had been weeks, months, perhaps even close to a year since they’d spoken, but she still drifted in and out of his mind on occasion. It was mainly when he was close to sleep, drifting in and out of consciousness, focusing only on the better things that he’d been lucky enough to come in contact with. She also came with sadness. Regret, anger over messing everything up, over losing everything that counted. She was a whole sea of emotion, he would be swimming in a vast ocean of love, only to be pulled under by pain. Barely keeping afloat in what could have been, he’d choke on self-loathing before he could make it to shore, drowning in the storm. The worst part was, he knew it was his fault, which just intensified everything he felt. Early on, he’d spend his time wishing he didn’t hurt her, but he’d quickly dispel these thoughts from his mind, giving a bitter chuckle before reminding himself that there was no way he was as important to her as she was to him. Regardless of all this, he came back. He stood outside of the campus, his face consumed by weary looks and held-back tears. He knew this was a bad idea, but he didn’t know what else to do. He wandered to his old apartment, with any luck she’d be inside, sitting on the couch, drinking tea, or maybe a glass of white wine. She’d think “Oh, what an odd time for somebody to visit. I wonder who it could be.” She’d look through and see none other then the man who let her in then ran away. She’d gasp, cry. “Oh, I’ve missed you, oh, I’m so glad you’re back.” Of course, this was all only in his thoughts. His unbearable new-found bitterness soon took over, reminding himself that even if she was home, which was unlikely, she’d in no way be glad he was back. Even though he told himself this was horrible idea tens of times, he still raised his hand to the door and let it rap against the wood a few times, bracing himself for whatever would greet him once, or if, the door opened.
